Chelsea have reportedly engaged in positive initial discussions with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding a potential deal for striker Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old forward has one year remaining on his current contract at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton is understood to be open to Welbeck’s departure, provided they receive a fair transfer fee. Welbeck has maintained his scoring consistency in the Premier League, netting 13 goals last season and 10 in the campaign prior.
Chelsea’s Transfer Strategy Shift
The potential acquisition of Welbeck aligns with a reported shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy, which now appears to prioritise physically imposing players with established Premier League experience. This approach is seen as a move away from their previous focus on acquiring young talent.
Under manager Xabi Alonso, Chelsea has reportedly identified a need for experienced players. Earlier in the transfer window, the club showed interest in Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka and free agent John Stones, further indicating this change in direction. Welbeck’s appeal to Alonso is said to be based on his qualities as both a player and a leader.
Chelsea has already secured Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a record fee for a British player, and is also close to signing Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix. These moves, alongside the interest in Welbeck, suggest a clear intent to bring in players deemed more ‘Premier League ready’.
The arrival of Welbeck could also raise questions about the futures of other strikers at Chelsea, including Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Marc Guiu. Emmanuel Emegha, who recently joined from Strasbourg, is also part of the forward line.
Welbeck’s Career and Impact
Welbeck played in all but one of Brighton’s 38 Premier League games last season, achieving his best league goal return with 13 goals. Since joining Brighton from Watford in 2020, he has scored 51 goals in matches for the club.
His career began at Manchester United, where he scored 29 times in 142 appearances before moving to Arsenal in 2014. At Arsenal, he registered 32 goals in 126 games over six seasons, followed by a year at Watford.
The interest in Welbeck marks another instance of Chelsea recruiting from Brighton, following previous transfers of players such as Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Robert Sanchez. Several Brighton staff members, including sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell, have also moved to Stamford Bridge in recent years.
Despite his age, Welbeck is seen as a valuable addition due to his extensive experience. Chelsea’s current senior strikers have an average age of 23, with a combined 269 Premier League appearances and 74 goals. Welbeck alone boasts 400 appearances and 90 goals in the Premier League.
Manchester United had previously explored bringing Welbeck back to Old Trafford in the 2025 summer window, and also showed interest a year prior. However, those moves did not materialise. Welbeck has scored nine goals in 20 games against Manchester United since his departure from the club.
The situation remains in its early stages, but there is optimism from all parties that a deal could be reached for Welbeck to join Chelsea.
