Rhinos secure significant victory

Leeds Rhinos delivered a strong performance against Hull Kingston Rovers, a match that also served as an annual motor neurone disease (MND) awareness fixture. The event paid tribute to club legend Rob Burrow, two years after his passing. The atmosphere at Headingley was described as emotional, with numerous pre-match tributes dedicated to Burrow.

The game marked Leeds’ highest attendance since 2020, with the crowd witnessing a significant victory. This result further solidified Leeds’ position as contenders for the Super League title, following a previous win against Warrington.

Leeds are currently two points clear at the top of the league standings and six points ahead of Hull KR after this one-sided encounter. The team’s coach, Brad Arthur, commented on the team’s bravery, stating they pushed hard to be brave for Rob and his family, and that they withstood early pressure.

Key performances and match details

The match saw Leeds dominate for extended periods. Jake Connor, wearing the number seven jersey famously associated with Rob Burrow, was a standout performer. His display has led to increasing speculation about an England spot in the upcoming World Cup.

The first half-hour was competitive, with only three goal kicks scored, two of which came from Connor, making the score 4-2. Leeds then established a 16-point lead by halftime, largely due to Connor’s two assists for tries by Chris Hankinson and Maika Sivo.

Chris Hankinson got Leeds’ first try to open up what had been a cagey game.Photograph: Allan McKenzie/SWpix.com/Shutterstock Credit: theguardian.com

After the restart, Connor continued to influence the game, helping Leeds pull further away from Hull KR. A sin-binning for Rhyse Martin of Hull KR opened up more opportunities for Leeds, with Connor capitalising on this with a clever kick that led to Sivo scoring his 27th Super League try of the season. Sivo is now two tries clear of Lewis Martin’s tally of 25 from last year.

This try extended Leeds’ lead to 24-2, making a comeback for Hull KR appear unlikely even with half an hour remaining. Hull KR coach Willie Peters acknowledged that his team had been similar the previous week but had managed to get away with it then. He noted the team needed to understand why these performances were occurring, despite some fight and physicality from his players against a strong Leeds side.

Implications for the season

Hull KR managed to score a try through Noah Booth, but shortly after, Connor scored following an error. Leeds captain Ash Handley then completed the victory with another team try.

This marks the second time this season that Leeds has comprehensively defeated the defending champions. The previous encounter in Las Vegas resulted in a 58-6 defeat for Hull KR. While the scoreline in this match was not as wide, it served as another reminder of the challenge Hull KR faces in their quest for back-to-back titles.

Leeds have won all seven of their home fixtures this season, demonstrating their strength on home soil. The team’s current form suggests they will be a formidable opponent for any team in the league as the season progresses.

The club’s tribute to Rob Burrow, who made the number seven shirt famous, added an emotional layer to the evening. Burrow’s courage during his battle with MND was highlighted, reinforcing that some aspects of life are more significant than rugby league, yet he would have appreciated Leeds positioning themselves among the Super League’s elite.
