James sidelined for Panama match

England manager Thomas Tuchel has addressed his selection strategy for full-backs following confirmation that Reece James will not participate in Saturday’s World Cup match against Panama. James, a right-back for Chelsea, reported a hamstring issue after England’s goalless draw with Ghana and has not traveled with the squad to New Jersey from their Kansas City base for the final Group L fixture.

While James is expected to miss the upcoming match, Tuchel expressed confidence that the defender could still feature in the tournament, potentially for England’s last-32 game next week. However, reports suggest that James remains a significant doubt for the initial knockout stages, even though England has secured a place regardless of their final group standing.

The injury to James, coupled with a calf problem that led to Tino Livramento’s early departure from the United States, has brought scrutiny to Tuchel’s decision to include only three recognized full-backs in the squad. The selected genuine full-backs were Djed Spence, James, and Livramento.

Squad depth and alternative options

Despite the injuries, Tuchel affirmed his satisfaction with the available options at right-back. He stated, “I selected the team, so I’m very happy with everything with the characteristic of the players and strengths that they give us.” He acknowledged the challenge of player availability in a tournament setting, adding, “We would love to have every single key player, we would love to have them available, it’s not available – we find solutions, it’s what we do. It’s a tournament, we move on.”

Other players in the squad who could fill defensive roles include Nico O’Reilly, who played left-back for Manchester City last season but is primarily a midfielder, and Dan Burn, a recognized centre-back who has also played at left-back. For the right-back position, Tuchel’s alternative choices include Spence and central defenders Jarell Quansah and Ezri Konsa.

Both James and Livramento have a history of injuries, which has led to questions regarding Tuchel’s decision to include them in the World Cup squad. Tuchel, however, remains optimistic about James’s return, describing his condition as a “minor hamstring issue.” He confirmed that James has not trained for two days and is currently undergoing an accelerated rehabilitation program, with the hope that he will be available later in the tournament.

In other team news, there was positive information regarding the fitness of Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Elliot Anderson. Tuchel confirmed that all three players are expected to be available for the match against Panama. Rice, who had a calf issue, and Anderson, who experienced a glute problem, both missed training on Thursday but rejoined the team on Friday. Saka, who has been managing a long-term Achilles tendinitis complaint, is ready to start after appearing as a substitute in the first two matches.

Panama’s preparation and team dynamics

Ahead of their match against England, Panama’s training session on Friday saw an incident where two players, Cecilio Waterman and Jose Luis Rodriguez, had to be separated after a physical altercation. The players were observed shoving each other before teammates intervened.

Panama coach Thomas Christiansen, however, viewed the incident positively. He commented, “What happened today in training, this is a normal situation. I would’ve liked to see these situations more often, that means the team is alive.” Christiansen suggested that such displays indicate the players’ eagerness to perform well and secure a starting position. He added, “If this happens another time, it’s a good sign that they are alive.”

England aims to secure the top spot in Group L with a victory over Panama, which would allow them to plan their route through the knockout stages. The match against Panama is scheduled for Saturday at 22:00 BST.
