Match preparations and atmosphere
Ecuador have submitted a complaint to World Cup organisers regarding noise disturbances outside their team hotel. The incident occurred prior to their last-32 fixture against co-hosts Mexico. Reports from local media indicate that approximately 1,000 Mexico supporters gathered outside the hotel in Mexico City on Monday, engaging in a noisy ‘serenade’. The fans reportedly used noisemakers, pans, and buckets while singing the Mexican folk song “Cielito Lindo” before police intervened.
Ecuador’s football federation released a statement expressing their disapproval of the conduct, stating that such actions deviate from the principles of fair play, equality, and unity that a World Cup should embody. The federation added that the team intends to respond on the pitch. They also voiced confidence that these actions would not detract from the football celebration between the two countries. FIFA has been contacted for comment regarding the complaint.
The match is scheduled to be played at Mexico City Stadium. The atmosphere for the game has been described as intense, with deafening boos directed at Ecuador’s team during warm-ups, and a significant din for the Mexican players. The conditions and subsequent wait for the game to start are believed to have heightened the overall mood.
Team news and tactical outlook
For Ecuador, there are no changes from the squad that secured a victory against Germany in their previous outing. Moisés Caicedo has taken over the captain’s armband, following Enner Valencia‘s decision to pass it on earlier in the week. Ecuador’s head coach, Sebastián Beccacece, an Argentinian, assumed the role in August 2024, succeeding Félix Sánchez. Beccacece, who is 45 years old, has instilled a strong defensive discipline in the team, which has become adept at counterattacking. This tactical approach, characterised by a low block, has led to some criticism from parts of Ecuador’s media regarding a perceived lack of offensive creativity. Ecuador were among the lowest-scoring South American teams to qualify for the World Cup, alongside Paraguay.
Mexico’s squad for the World Cup includes Julian Quiñones, 29, who was born in Colombia and became a naturalised Mexican citizen in 2023. He was first called up to the national team in the same year. Manager Javier Aguirre has reportedly settled on his preferred starting XI, which features 17-year-old Gilberto Mora. Mexico has a strong home record, having not lost a competitive fixture at the Azteca Stadium since 2013, or a home friendly since 2018. The Estadio Azteca has a rich history, having hosted a World Cup knockout match where Diego Maradona lifted the trophy, and also played a role in the inaugural women’s World Cup.
The last three encounters between Mexico and Ecuador have all resulted in draws, with two of them being goalless, suggesting a potentially tactical match. One observer, Harry Sachar, expressed a desire for both teams to play better than France did earlier in the tournament. The French team’s performance against Sweden was noted as a significant display in the World Cup so far.
Match conditions and officiating
The weather conditions in Mexico City have been a factor, with lightning initially causing concerns. According to US protocols, a match must be suspended if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius and cannot resume until 30 minutes after the last strike. While the sky has since cleared and the rain has eased, there was a delay in the players warming up, leading to an anticipated later start time. Local media reports suggested the game would begin at 20:00 local time, an hour later than originally scheduled. Initially, there was news that hydration breaks would be ditched for the match, though this was later suggested to potentially not be the case.
The referee for the match is Slavko Vinčić from Slovenia. Vinčić previously officiated the 2024 UEFA Champions League final and has also taken charge of Brazil v Morocco and Jordan v Algeria in the current tournament.
Mexico has a long history in the World Cup, having participated in the first ever match in 1930, where they lost 4-1 to France in Uruguay.
