By Theo Marsden — 3 July 2026 — 3 min read

Real Madrid has stated it has no intention of attempting to sign Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea this summer. The Spanish club issued a statement on Friday, asserting that recent reports and statements regarding an alleged interest in the player “do not correspond to reality.”

Despite these denials, well-placed sources indicate that Fernandez is keen to leave Chelsea and join Real Madrid, particularly after Chelsea failed to secure European qualification last season. Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, has also publicly discussed his client’s future, suggesting that the midfielder is open to exploring a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea, however, has confirmed that they have not received any direct club-to-club approach from Real Madrid for Fernandez. The Blues value the midfielder at £120m should serious interest materialise, but they are not actively looking to sell and would prefer to retain him as a key player under new coach Xabi Alonso.

Fernandez’s desire to leave and Chelsea’s stance

Enzo Fernandez, who cost Chelsea a then-British record fee of £107m in February 2023, has reportedly expressed a desire to move to the Spanish capital. His preference for a move to Madrid has been evident from comments made by his camp and the Argentina international himself.

In April, Fernandez received a two-game suspension from former coach Liam Rosenior after publicly stating that he did not know if he would remain at Chelsea next season and that he would “love” to live in Madrid. These comments, along with others made in Spanish-language interviews following Chelsea’s dip in form and Champions League exit, have created an uncomfortable situation for the club.

Despite the challenges, Chelsea does not view the situation as irreparable. The club believes that Xabi Alonso can successfully reintegrate Fernandez into the squad and help mend his relationship with supporters through strong performances on the pitch. Fernandez contributed 15 goals and seven assists in all competitions last season and served as vice-captain, highlighting his importance to the team.

Image caption,No Chelsea player played more Premier League minutes last season than Enzo Fernandez (3,121) Credit: bbc.co.uk

Other clubs reportedly interested

While Real Madrid has publicly distanced itself from Fernandez, other prominent clubs are reportedly showing interest. According to journalist Gianluigi Longari, Premier League sides Arsenal and Manchester City have now entered the race to sign the Argentina international. Longari noted that Real Madrid would need to make a “sacrifice” to present an offer to Chelsea.

Fabrizio Romano has also revealed that there have been “zero contacts” between Chelsea and Real Madrid regarding a deal for Fernandez. Romano stated that Real Madrid considers Fernandez to be one of five midfield options and that any potential move depends on player departures from the Spanish club.

Real Madrid’s public denial follows similar private signals from sources at Paris St-Germain and Manchester City, both of whom have previously been linked with the midfielder. Real Madrid has already signed Marc Cucurella from Chelsea this summer in a deal worth up to £51.8m.

The Spanish giants’ statement also expressed respect for Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea, emphasising their excellent institutional relationship. They regret that information not corresponding to reality continues to be disseminated, causing confusion among fans and potentially harming the involved entities and individuals. Real Madrid issued a similar statement last month to deny reports linking them with Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise.

England secured their place in the World Cup last 16 after a dramatic victory against DR Congo in Atlanta. Striker Harry Kane scored two late goals, turning a potential defeat into a 2-1 win for the Three Lions. The result means England will now face co-hosts Mexico in the next round.

The match, played under the dome of the Atlanta Stadium, saw England fall behind early. DR Congo‘s Brian Cipenga scored the opening goal, beating England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at his near post. This early setback contributed to a challenging first half for England, with observers noting the team appeared tactically unbalanced and struggled to find rhythm.

Despite the difficulties, England created some opportunities, forcing several saves from DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. However, the team’s performance remained inconsistent, leading to moments of frustration among the players. Manager Thomas Tuchel was observed attempting to calm his players and convey tactical adjustments during hydration breaks.

Kane’s decisive intervention

As the game progressed, England continued to press for an equaliser. The team’s efforts intensified, and the pressure mounted, particularly during the second hydration break when England was still 1-0 down. It was during this period that Tuchel again addressed his players, delivering instructions to restructure their approach.

Kane‘s first goal came after Anthony Gordon, who had replaced Marcus Rashford, delivered a cross. Kane headed the ball powerfully across the goal, beating Mpasi and bringing England level. This goal sparked a wave of relief among the England contingent in the stadium.

The momentum shifted, and England continued to push forward as DR Congo showed signs of tiring. Kane then scored his second goal, again from a pass by Gordon. He twisted and shot with his right foot from inside the box, sending the ball into the net and securing the lead for England. This decisive strike led to celebrations from the England bench.

Kane‘s performance was highlighted as crucial, with his two goals not only saving the match but also potentially safeguarding Tuchel‘s position and the reputation of the Football Association. His ability to deliver in critical moments was underscored, particularly given the team’s struggles throughout the game.

Player performances and tactical observations

Individual player assessments reflected the challenging nature of the match for England. Jordan Pickford received a low rating for conceding the opening goal at his near post. Defenders Djed Spence, Ezri Konsa, and Marc Guehi were noted for being part of a back four that appeared vulnerable and afforded too much space to the opposition.

Nico O’Reilly, who has recently become England‘s starting left-back, also faced a demanding night as part of an unsettled defensive unit. In midfield, Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice were left with significant ground to cover, though Rice attempted to impose himself and provided dangerous deliveries from set-pieces. Jude Bellingham tried to inject energy but was booked for a late challenge and had two headers saved by Mpasi.

Wingers Noni Madueke and Marcus Rashford showed flashes of quality but struggled with their end product, with Madueke providing England‘s best chance of the first half before being replaced by Bukayo Saka. Saka, along with Anthony Gordon and Eberechi Eze, made positive impacts after coming on as substitutes, contributing to the late turnaround.

Gordon, in particular, was instrumental, providing the crosses for both of Kane‘s goals. Saka offered a reliable threat on the right, combining well with Rice, who moved to right-back in the latter stages of the game. Eze was also involved in Kane‘s late equaliser, offering a different attacking option.

The match highlighted ongoing questions about England‘s tactical setup and defensive solidity. The team’s initial struggles led to concerns about their ability to build a cohesive unit, with some observers pointing to a high turnover of players and combinations. However, the spirit shown to turn the game around and the decisive contributions from Kane ultimately secured their progression.

England‘s next match will be against Mexico in Mexico City.

By Harry Loxley — 3 July 2026 — 3 min read

Katia Aveiro, sister of Cristiano Ronaldo, has indicated that the Portugal captain is likely to retire from international football following the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Her comments suggest that the tournament in North America will mark the conclusion of his career with the national team.

Speaking to Portuguese media before Portugal‘s round-of-32 match against Croatia, which Portugal won 2-1, Aveiro stated that her brother’s international career is nearing its end. She referred to this period as a “last dance” for the player on the international stage.

When questioned about Ronaldo‘s potential participation in Euro 2028, Aveiro responded, “From the information that I have, you can start to say goodbye, because I believe this is it – so, enjoy it while you can.” She clarified that she was referring specifically to his involvement with the Portuguese national team.

Aveiro added, “I don’t think he’ll retire today, but it will be soon. I truly believe this is the farewell, so enjoy it a lot because… It will be difficult to find someone like him again.” She emphasized that her information came from a reliable source.

Ronaldo’s World Cup performance and legacy

Cristiano Ronaldo is participating in his sixth World Cup and is Portugal‘s most-capped player and all-time leading goalscorer. His primary objective remains to secure a World Cup title, adding to Portugal‘s European Championship success in 2016.

Despite his ongoing contributions, Ronaldo‘s performances at the current tournament have drawn scrutiny from some observers. He has scored three goals so far, including two in a 5-0 victory against Uzbekistan and an equalizer against Croatia.

Portugal‘s coach, Roberto Martinez, included Ronaldo in the starting lineup against Croatia, seeking a strong performance to boost the team’s tournament campaign. Ronaldo has accumulated 146 goals in 232 caps for Portugal.

Aveiro addressed critics of her brother, stating, “For very intelligent people, those who understand football, those who like football, have to like Cristiano Ronaldo. Those who don’t like Cristiano Ronaldo, don’t like football – and they miss out.”

She highlighted Ronaldo‘s long-standing impact on the sport: “Ronaldo has been breaking records for 20-something years, do you think we’re not happy? We’ve lived through so much, we’ve achieved so much.”

Looking ahead to the last 16

Ronaldo‘s sister expressed confidence in her brother and the team. “I’m incredibly proud. I was in Qatar, and I’m here. It’s a tremendous pride. I’m confident and we’ll smile at the end. Ronaldo is great and confident, less nervous than us. I felt good energy and confidence. For us fans, it brings comfort. We can trust.”

In the match against Croatia, Ronaldo made his 26th World Cup finals appearance. This achievement places him ahead of Germany‘s Lothar Matthaus in terms of World Cup appearances, with only Lionel Messi having more at 29.

The victory over Croatia has set up a potential clash with Spain in the last 16 of the tournament.

While Portugal is set to co-host the 2030 World Cup, the prospect of Ronaldo playing at the age of 45 has not been officially ruled out, though Aveiro’s recent comments suggest his international career will conclude sooner.

British Grand Prix: A Weekend of Entertainment and Economic Impact

The British Grand Prix at Silverstone is being highlighted as a comprehensive weekend event, extending beyond just a motor race. According to Stuart Pringle, the chief executive of Silverstone, the event encompasses entertainment, live music, hospitality, and participation. This year marks the 76th running of the event at the Northamptonshire circuit.

The economic and cultural influence of the Grand Prix is substantial. Last year, the event contributed £154 million to the local economy over three and a half days. The sport also supports the local economy throughout the year, with a significant number of people employed in the high-performance motorsport engineering sector, which is largely centred around Silverstone.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-338" src="https://newsgb.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/inline_gn-8d094d016782_img-1.webp" alt="General view of fans ahead of the British Grand Prix.

Approximately 565,000 Formula 1 fans are anticipated to attend this year, surpassing the record attendance from last year. Some attendees arrived as early as Wednesday, with activities including watching England’s FIFA World Cup victory on big screens. A concert featuring David Guetta and Anne-Marie was also held on Thursday, drawing tens of thousands of people as part of a series of musical performances.

Pringle noted the growing reputation of Silverstone within the music industry, attracting prominent artists such as Sam Fender and Raye last year, and Richard Ashcroft this Friday. Many of these artists are also F1 fans and enjoy being part of the event. Additionally, a stand-up comedy programme is available, featuring comedian and actor Jack Whitehall.

On-Track Action and Driver Prospects

The British Grand Prix weekend includes competitive action starting from Friday, as Silverstone hosts a Sprint weekend for the first time since 2021. The 17-lap sprint race is scheduled for Saturday at 12:00 BST, with the main 52-lap Grand Prix commencing on Sunday at 15:00 BST.

George Russell recently secured a win in Austria, reducing his points deficit in the Drivers’ Championship. He will be aiming for his first victory on home ground. Lewis Hamilton, a multiple winner of the British Grand Prix, will be looking to improve his mid-season title prospects following a challenging race for Ferrari last Sunday. Pringle suggested that a victory for Hamilton with a new team at Silverstone would be a significant story, especially if he were to achieve a tenth win at the circuit.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-339" src="https://newsgb.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/inline_gn-8d094d016782_img-3.webp" alt="Lewis Hamilton is wearing a red and white top, has short black hair in tight cornrows and has a trimmed black beard.

Last year’s race at Silverstone was won by Lando Norris, who will face challenges to repeat his success this weekend for McLaren. Other British drivers, including Haas’ Oliver Bearman and Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad, will be targeting points-paying positions. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli remains a favourite for the event, despite not winning the last two races, while Max Verstappen is also expected to be a strong contender.

The Silverstone circuit, known for its history and memorable moments, hosted the first F1 World Championship race in 1950. The 3.661-mile track offers several overtaking opportunities, particularly through The Loop and the high-speed middle sector leading to the Hangar Straight. The current weather forecast indicates no rain throughout the three days of track activity, with temperatures expected to be in the mid-20s from Friday to Sunday.

For fans unable to attend, commentary of the race will be available across various platforms, including BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Sounds, and the BBC Sport website and app. Additionally, the entire Silverstone weekend, including all F1 on-track action, will be broadcast live.

By Niamh Pendlebury — 3 July 2026 — 3 min read

Rice’s fitness concerns

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has indicated that Declan Rice is expected to be available for the upcoming FIFA World Cup last-16 match against Mexico. This comes despite Rice experiencing what Tuchel described as “terrible pain” due to an ongoing nerve issue in his back. The Arsenal midfielder was substituted late in England’s 2-1 victory over DR Congo in the last 32, a match where he played an unconventional role at right-back for a period.

Rice has been managing various fitness issues throughout the tournament, including a calf injury that led him to miss England’s final group-stage match against Panama. He has also contended with back and hamstring problems, which have necessitated the use of compression sleeves on his legs. Tuchel acknowledged Rice’s resilience, noting that when the player reports significant pain, it indicates a serious issue.

The 27-year-old has played a substantial number of minutes this season, making him one of the most active players in the World Cup. Tuchel confirmed that Rice is capable of playing through the discomfort, stating, “He can, yeah,” when asked if Rice could absorb the pain from game to game. Rice himself admitted that his stint at right-back during the DR Congo game was challenging, describing it as “probably the hardest 12 minutes of the game.”

Versatility and team impact

Rice’s versatility was highlighted during the match against DR Congo when he was moved to right-back. This tactical adjustment occurred after Brian Cipenga scored an early goal for Congo, putting England behind. Tuchel’s decision to shift Rice to accommodate an additional forward, Eberechi Eze, proved effective. Rice, who joined Arsenal for a reported £100 million in 2023, has played in the right-back position a few times this season, though he views it as a temporary measure.

Despite his willingness to play wherever needed for the team, Rice expressed a preference not to continue in the right-back role, especially as the calibre of opposing wingers is expected to increase in later stages of the tournament. His ability to adapt, however, remains a crucial asset for England, particularly given the team’s defensive injury concerns.

Declan Rice looks set to be fit for the last-16 clash with Mexico(Getty) Credit: independent.co.uk

The team’s defensive situation is showing signs of improvement, with Reece James and Jarell Quansah nearing a return. James had started England’s first two matches before a hamstring issue sidelined him, while Quansah, who deputised at right-back against Panama, was forced off due to an ankle injury. Tuchel noted that both players are making good progress in their recovery, with Quansah slightly ahead of James.

Looking ahead to Mexico

The focus for England is now on the last-16 clash against Mexico, which will take place at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Tuchel’s primary concern is ensuring Rice is available for this crucial fixture. The coach relayed Rice’s comment, “I can do it for the team, but I am in terrible pain,” after the DR Congo match, indicating the player’s dedication.

Rice reassured the coaching staff that his condition is not a new injury but rather nerve pain that he expects to recover from. His availability for the match against Mexico is a significant boost for England as they prepare to face a strong opponent in a challenging environment.

Rice is battling nerve pain in his back(Getty) Credit: independent.co.uk

The return of James and Quansah could also provide further defensive options for England in potential future matches, with Tuchel stating they are “getting closer and closer” to being available. The team will aim to continue their World Cup campaign with Rice playing a key role in midfield.

By Harry Loxley — 3 July 2026 — 3 min read

Portugal’s Tactical Shift and Ronaldo’s Contribution

Portugal secured a victory against Croatia in a dramatic World Cup encounter, a match that saw manager Roberto Martinez make crucial changes. Initially, Portugal’s first half was marked by significant possession but only one shot on target. The team’s performance improved after falling behind, prompting Martinez to make a quadruple substitution that shifted the momentum of the game.

One of the players introduced, Goncalo Ramos, proved instrumental, scoring a header from a cross by Rafael Leao in the 94th minute. Ramos, who was brought on as a number 10 and then moved to lead the line, has a history of impactful performances in the World Cup knockout rounds, including a hat-trick against Switzerland in 2022. Earlier in the match, Cristiano Ronaldo scored from a penalty, ending a wait to score in the knockout stages of the World Cup. This goal came after a disallowed effort where he was deemed offside.

Despite his goal, Ronaldo was later substituted, a decision that drew commentary. Piers Morgan, for instance, criticised commentators for their assessment of the player’s performance. Ronaldo, who played every minute in the group stage, left the field in tears, brandishing the number 21 shirt of the late Diogo Jota, a gesture of tribute. The entire squad and staff later posed with Jota’s shirt, indicating a collective cause.

Croatia’s Valiant Effort and Modric’s Farewell

Croatia, known for their resilience in World Cup knockout rounds, believed they had found an equaliser in the 103rd minute through Josko Gvardiol. However, the goal was disallowed due to an offside call involving Mario Pasalic, who received a flick-on from Igor Matanovic before finding Gvardiol. This decision was part of a match filled with VAR controversy.

Veteran player Luka Modric concluded his World Cup journey with this match. For Modric and Croatia, it marked a valiant end to an epic journey. Another experienced player, Ivan Perisic, who scored in the 2018 final, also found the net in this game, getting forward from left-back to score his 158th cap. Josip Stanisic provided the cross that led to Perisic’s goal.

Croatia had several other opportunities, with Mateo Kovacic driving forward and having a shot saved by Portugal’s goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, and another attempt hitting the woodwork. Petar Sucic had two goals disallowed for offside, and Pasalic headed wide in the 89th minute. Despite their defensive struggles, Portugal’s goalkeeper Costa remained defiant. Portugal will now face Martinez’s native Spain in Dallas.

Post-Match Reactions and Future Prospects

The decision to substitute Ronaldo, who had scored a penalty and had a goal narrowly disallowed, was a significant moment. His departure from the field in Toronto marked an emotional scene, as he displayed the shirt of his late teammate. This act resonated with the team, suggesting a deeper motivation for their continued performance in the tournament.

The match was also notable for the discussions surrounding Ronaldo’s future. His sister had previously hinted at a possible retirement, and while it is unlikely he will play in the 2030 World Cup at 45, the certainty of his future remains a topic of speculation. The game itself was a testament to the unpredictable nature of knockout football, transforming from a sterile first half into a stunning second half with epic drama.

Portugal’s victory means they will continue their campaign, carrying the tribute to Jota into their next fixture against Spain. The match in Toronto provided a dramatic conclusion for Croatia and Modric’s World Cup career.

The match was marked by intense moments, including a penalty awarded to Portugal after Renato Veiga was fouled in the box by Nikola Vlasic. Ronaldo’s successful penalty kick was described as terrific and cathartic.

By Niamh Pendlebury — 3 July 2026 — 4 min read

Portugal secures World Cup last 16 spot

Portugal has advanced to the World Cup last 16 following a dramatic victory over Croatia in Toronto. The match saw a wild finish, including multiple VAR decisions and a late winning goal from Gonçalo Ramos, securing Portugal’s progression in the tournament.

The game was billed as a significant occasion for two footballing icons, Luka Modrić and Cristiano Ronaldo. Modrić, at 40, concluded what is likely his final World Cup appearance, while Ronaldo continues in the competition. Both players scored in a match filled with incidents, though neither was the most influential on the field.

The atmosphere in the stadium was lively throughout the evening, following a sweltering day. Portugal largely controlled the first half, creating several opportunities. An early chance saw Rafael Leão set up Bruno Fernandes, whose two shots were either saved by Dominik Livaković or blocked by the Croatian defense.

Pedro Neto was a persistent threat for Portugal in the initial period, often outmanoeuvring Ivan Perišić, who played at full-back for Croatia. Neto delivered numerous crosses into the box, but despite their tempting nature, none resulted in a goal. Livaković missed one such cross, but the ball eluded Ronaldo, and another cross saw both Ronaldo and Fernandes just miss contact at the far post.

Croatia takes the lead and VAR drama unfolds

Croatia, despite being on the back foot, remained resolute in the first half. They confidently defended against Portugal’s attacks and had a strategy to isolate Martin Baturina against João Cancelo, aiming to deliver balls into the box for Ante Budimir. This approach was not overly successful, partly due to the physical attention from Rúben Dias.

At half-time, Croatia’s coach Zlatko Dalić replaced Budimir with Igor Matanović, and the dynamic of the game shifted. Croatia quickly gained momentum, and Portugal’s intensity waned. Eight minutes into the second half, Croatia took the lead when Josep Stanišić delivered a cross from the right. Perišić controlled the ball at the back post and drove it low past Diogo Costa.

Croatia then had a brief period of dominance. Petar Sučić found Matanović in the box, who scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Sučić himself later had a strong shot saved by Costa. Meanwhile, Leão hit the Croatian bar from 25 yards, and Ronaldo had a goal ruled out for offside.

A pivotal moment occurred when Livaković mishandled a backpass, leading to a corner for Portugal. Following the corner, VAR was consulted, and the Norwegian referee Espen Eskås was sent to the monitor. It was determined that Nikola Vlašić had an arm wrapped around Leão, resulting in a penalty decision.

Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to take the penalty, converting it to level the score. This goal marked Ronaldo’s first-ever in the World Cup knockout stage, and at 41, he became the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout match, surpassing former teammate Pepe, who scored at 39 years and nine months.

Cristiano Ronaldo kept his composure to score a penalty against Croatia to make it 1-1.Photograph: Jeff Vogan/ZUMA Press Wire/Shutterstock Credit: theguardian.com

Ronaldo’s penalty came shortly after he had an equalizer disallowed for offside. Despite some suggestions that he might be substituted, manager Roberto Martínez kept him on the field, allowing him to convert the penalty. However, after Croatia regained momentum and had another goal disallowed for offside, Ronaldo was eventually replaced by Rúben Neves with 10 minutes remaining.

Late winner and final VAR intervention

The substitution proved effective, as Portugal began to control the ball more and close down counter-attacking spaces. The play was frequently directed towards Leão, who ultimately made a decisive contribution. His cross was flicked into the net by Gonçalo Ramos in stoppage time, securing the winning goal for Portugal.

Gonçalo Ramos is swamped by teammates after scoring the winning goal in added time for Portugal.Photograph: Eduardo Lima/EPA Credit: theguardian.com

The celebrations for Ramos’s goal were extended, leading the referee to add three extra minutes to stoppage time. In the final moments of the match, Croatia appeared to have found an equalizer, but VAR intervened once more. Joško Gvardiol’s goal was ruled out for offside, the fourth such decision in the game, with a slight touch off Igor Matanović being the determining factor. This decision led to plastic bottles being thrown onto the pitch in protest, but the outcome remained unchanged.

With this victory, Portugal now prepares to face Spain in the last 16. Spain secured their spot with a 3-0 win over Austria.

By Harry Loxley — 3 July 2026 — 3 min read

Wataru Endo has commenced his pre-season training at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre earlier than many of his teammates. This early start follows his exclusion from Japan’s World Cup squad due to fitness concerns.

The midfielder had not featured for Liverpool since sustaining a significant ankle injury during a match against Sunderland on February 11. Despite his return to international duty last month and playing 45 minutes in a warm-up fixture against Iceland on May 31, Japan’s head coach Hajime Moriyasu ultimately decided to omit him from the squad for the tournament, which is being held across Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Following the confirmation of his exclusion, Endo announced his retirement from international football via social media. He posted an image from Liverpool’s Kirkby training base on Thursday with the caption ‘Day 1’, indicating the start of his pre-season. The majority of his colleagues are scheduled to return on Monday, July 13.

Endo’s International Retirement and Future at Liverpool

In his social media message, Endo expressed his frustration at not participating in the World Cup but also pride in the national team’s progress since the Qatar World Cup. He stated that he had done everything possible since his injury and had no regrets regarding his efforts.

Endo conveyed his belief in the current Japan team’s ability to overcome challenges and achieve success. He confirmed his retirement from the national team, stating he would now support them as a fan. He also encouraged unity and support for the team in the ongoing tournament.

Japan was eliminated from the tournament in the last-32 round when Brazil secured a 2-1 victory.

Endo is expected to join Liverpool’s pre-season tour to the United States, which begins on July 20. During this tour, Andoni Iraola’s team is scheduled to play friendly matches against Sunderland, Wrexham, and Leeds United in Nashville, New York, and Chicago.

Image de l'article :Andoni Iraola set to hand opportunity to veteran Liverpool star Credit: onefootball.com

The arrival of new head coach Andoni Iraola could present Endo with opportunities for increased playing time. With several key midfielders, including Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch, away on World Cup duty, Iraola will have a reduced squad for initial assessments.

Endo, who is 33, missed the end of the previous season due to his ankle injury. Despite not being the most prominent name in the squad, he has often been a dependable option, contributing to both EFL Cup and Premier League successes. He is currently under contract until 2027.

Pre-Season Opportunity and Contract Situation

The upcoming pre-season is seen as a crucial period for Endo to impress the new coaching staff. His experience, tactical discipline, and defensive instincts are qualities that a new head coach might value when establishing team standards.

There is ongoing discussion regarding Endo’s long-term future at Liverpool. While he could remain a reliable squad option, especially given his professional attitude, the club may also consider options as he approaches the final year of his contract. Liverpool has been linked with potential midfield acquisitions, and other midfielders like Mac Allister and Curtis Jones have been mentioned in connection with possible departures.

This summer will be pivotal in determining whether Endo remains a part of Liverpool’s plans or if he will be among the players who move on. The pre-season tour to the United States, starting on July 20, will be an early test for the squad under Andoni Iraola.

By Theo Marsden — 3 July 2026 — 3 min read

Despite a government decision to permit extended opening hours until 5am for the upcoming England versus Mexico World Cup match, many pubs are expected to remain closed. The round of 16 fixture is scheduled to kick off at 1am on Monday, following England’s 2-1 victory over the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Wednesday.

The announcement on Thursday by Sir Keir Starmer allows pubs across England and Wales to stay open late for the match. This blanket extension means individual establishments do not need to apply for temporary event notices, a change from earlier regulations. Previously, pubs could stay open until 1am for matches kicking off between 5pm and 9pm, and until 2am for those starting after 9pm. Venues wishing to stay open beyond these times typically needed to apply five working days in advance.

The decision to relax the rules came after a significant outcry from MPs and pub owners. Initially, the business minister Kate Dearden had stated on Thursday morning that the government would not relax rules for pubs that had not applied in time for the 1am kick-off. However, following a backlash that included comments from London mayor Sadiq Khan, the government reversed its stance later that afternoon.

Some pub owners, however, have indicated that they will not be opening. Issues such as arranging staffing and being located in residential areas are cited as reasons for remaining closed. For example, a spokesperson for Wetherspoons stated that only five of their 800 pubs would be open for the match.

Similarly, Greene King, which operates 2,600 pubs, restaurants, and hotels across the UK, confirmed that over 600 of its pubs in England would be staying open late. Andrew Gallagher, brand and marketing director at Greene King, expressed delight at the permission to stay open, highlighting the atmosphere in their pubs and the opportunity for fans to gather.

Tommy Higgs, co-owner of The Three Horseshoes pub in Witney, Oxfordshire, confirmed his pub would not be opening. He explained that being in a built-up community makes it disrespectful to neighbours to have noise at 5am. Higgs also noted the difficulty in finding staff willing to work until that hour, particularly as many of his employees work part-time or have second jobs.

Higgs acknowledged that the extended hours might benefit larger establishments in bigger cities but deemed it pointless for his local pub. He suggested that other measures could better support the pub trade. The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) had previously reported a decline in the number of pubs in the UK, from 46,829 in 2020 to 44,656 in 2025.

The home secretary is set to use legislative power that permits the extension of alcohol licensing hours for events of “exceptional international, national or local significance.” Steve Reed, the communities secretary, is informing council leaders about these changes. Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, welcomed the decision, stating that pubs and fans would be pleased, as the local pub is considered the best place to watch the match.

Michael Kill, chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), also welcomed the news, noting that the government had responded to public support and recognized the challenges faced by licensed premises. The England versus Mexico match is scheduled to run until at least 3am UK time.

By Theo Marsden — 2 July 2026 — 3 min read

England Women have advanced to the T20 World Cup final after a 40-run victory against South Africa Women at The Oval. The semi-final match, played under lights in front of a crowd of 21,128 people, saw England overcome an early challenge to secure their place in Sunday’s final against Australia.

The match began with South Africa Women winning the toss and electing to field. England faced early difficulties, finding themselves at 23-3 in the fourth over. However, a significant partnership between captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight stabilised the innings. Sciver-Brunt, returning from a calf injury, scored an impressive 75 runs from 47 balls, while Knight contributed 58 runs from 47 balls. Their partnership of 133 runs from 90 balls helped England reach a total of 169-5.

Key Performances and Fielding Excellence

The partnership between Sciver-Brunt and Knight was crucial for England. Sciver-Brunt’s return to form was particularly notable, especially after missing three previous matches due to injury. She showed no signs of discomfort, even chasing down balls in the field. Knight also played a vital role, with both players drawing on their experience to navigate the early pressure.

England’s fielding was highlighted as a key factor in their success. Sophie Ecclestone made a leaping catch to dismiss Laura Wolvaardt, breaking an opening stand of 43. Ecclestone later took another catch to remove Suné Luus. Additionally, Danni Wyatt-Hodge executed a direct hit to run out Sinalo Jafta. These moments in the field demonstrated a strong all-round effort from the team.

The bowling attack also performed effectively. Lauren Bell and Charlie Dean each took two wickets, while Ecclestone, Linsey Smith, and Freya Kemp each claimed one wicket. Smith, who took the wicket of Wolvaardt, was noted for her celebration. South Africa’s chase saw Tazmin Brits score 51 runs from 45 balls, but their efforts were ultimately curtailed by England’s consistent bowling and fielding.

The atmosphere at The Kia Oval, Kennington was electric, with the large crowd adding to the energy of the semi-final. The match was officiated by Eloise Sheridan, Jacqueline Williams, Claire Polosak, Trudy Anderson, and Candace La Borde.

Looking Ahead to the Final

England’s coach, Charlotte Edwards, has overseen improvements in the team, particularly in handling pressure matches, which was evident in this semi-final. Despite being considered second favourites against Australia in the final, England now have a significant opportunity to secure their first trophy since 2017.

The team’s composure under pressure was a recurring theme, with Sciver-Brunt noting that she and Knight knew they had an important job to keep things on track. Knight also expressed her admiration for Sciver-Brunt’s performance after her injury layoff. The players also spoke about the infectious feeling of playing for England in front of a home crowd, expressing excitement for the final at Lord’s.

For South Africa, captain Laura Wolvaardt reflected on their campaign, acknowledging that their batting had not consistently fired, though their bowling and fielding were strong. She highlighted the importance of learning from the experience and improving for future matches, noting the team’s mix of experienced and younger players. The match concluded with England securing a comprehensive victory, setting up a highly anticipated final against Australia on Sunday.
