England overcome early deficit against DR Congo

England secured their place in the World Cup last 16 after a challenging encounter against DR Congo in Atlanta. The match saw Harry Kane score two late goals, turning the tide after Brian Cipenga had given DR Congo an early lead. The victory, a 2-1 result, means England will now face Mexico in the next round at the Estadio Azteca.

The game began with difficulty for England, as Cipenga found the net in the seventh minute. This early goal put pressure on Thomas Tuchel‘s side, who had been hoping for a more straightforward path to the knockout stages. The defensive positioning for DR Congo’s opener was questioned, with England’s central defenders drawn towards the ball, leaving Cipenga open on the far side to score past Jordan Pickford.

Despite the early setback, England created numerous opportunities throughout the first half. However, they were repeatedly thwarted by DR Congo’s goalkeeper, Lionel Mpasi, who made several key saves, including denying two Jude Bellingham headers and a Kane volley. Marcus Rashford also had a shot cleared off the line, highlighting England’s struggle to convert chances.

Kane’s decisive intervention

The turning point arrived in the latter stages of the match, with Kane stepping up to deliver two crucial goals. The first, a close-range header, came from a cross provided by substitute Anthony Gordon, bringing a sense of relief to the England camp. This goal levelled the score and shifted the momentum.

Kane’s second goal, struck high into the net from an angle, sealed England’s progression. Both of Kane’s goals were assisted by Gordon, who had come on as a substitute alongside Bukayo Saka. Gordon’s impact off the bench was significant, as he provided the crucial assists that ultimately decided the match.

England’s manager, Tuchel, made tactical changes during the game, including bringing on Eberechi Eze for Djed Spence and moving Declan Rice to right-back. These adjustments appeared to contribute to England’s improved performance in the second half, allowing them to break down DR Congo’s defence.

Challenges and tactical adjustments

The match was not without its challenges for England. Djed Spence, starting at right-back, struggled defensively and was replaced in the 71st minute. His performance, along with those of Noni Madueke and Marcus Rashford, was noted as being below par. Bellingham, despite being a consistent attacking threat, received a booking early in the game for a lunge on Nathanaël Mbuku.

Tuchel had preached patience to his team, believing that the sheer volume of chances would eventually lead to goals. This belief was ultimately validated by Kane’s late heroics. The team’s collective performance, particularly in defence, showed areas for improvement, with gaps appearing and players being caught out of position at times. The pressure on England was evident, particularly after the early goal, and the first hydration break offered a chance for the team to regroup.

The introduction of substitutes Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon for Madueke and Rashford in the 61st minute proved to be a pivotal moment. Gordon’s immediate impact, providing both assists for Kane, demonstrated the effectiveness of Tuchel’s tactical changes. Rice, who started in midfield, later moved to right-back after Spence’s substitution and performed more effectively in that role.

The victory marks England’s ninth knockout round win since 1966, achieved in a demanding fashion. Despite the difficulties, the result ensures their continuation in the tournament, with the focus now shifting to their upcoming match against Mexico.

The game also saw some controversy, with a penalty appeal for Kane being turned down in the 43rd minute after he was challenged by Mpasi. Despite the referee’s decision not to award a penalty, England continued to press, eventually finding their breakthrough.

The team will look to build on this hard-fought victory as they prepare for their last-16 tie against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
