Chelsea have finalised the acquisition of Marco Palestra from Atalanta, marking a significant move in the transfer market. The deal for the 21-year-old defender is reported to be worth £43m, according to one source, while another indicates a fee of £47m including add-ons. This transfer represents the first signing under the club’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, who officially began his role on Wednesday.

Palestra has signed a seven-year deal with Chelsea. His arrival is seen as a key step in the club’s efforts to restructure their squad following a tenth-place finish in the Premier League last season. Reports from Italy had previously suggested that Inter Milan was close to securing Palestra, but Chelsea reportedly intervened with a more substantial financial package and a more attractive wage offer.

Palestra’s Background and Versatility

Palestra initially joined Atalanta‘s youth setup in 2014 and made his professional debut for the club in December 2023. He spent the last season on loan at Cagliari, where he made a strong impression, featuring 37 times in Serie A. During his time with the Sardinian club, he contributed one goal and four assists.

His performances at Cagliari earned him the title of Serie A‘s defender of the season. He also made his senior international debut for Italy during a World Cup qualifying play-off against Northern Ireland in March, which occurred towards the end of his loan spell. Palestra boasts two caps for his country.

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso views Palestra as a versatile defender capable of playing multiple roles across the defence, including on both the left and right flanks. He can operate as a wing-back or a more defensive full-back. Palestra’s ability to cross with both feet and beat opponents has been highlighted, with only Juventus player Kenan Yildiz completing more take-ons than Palestra in Serie A last season.

Cagliari head coach Fabio Pisacane described Palestra’s athleticism, stating, “He seems like a player built on the PlayStation. Ninety-nine per cent acceleration and so on. He is handsome even when he runs. He looks like a panther, like a leopard.” The name Palestra itself means gym in Italian, perhaps fitting for a player identified to bring athleticism to Chelsea‘s flanks.

Impact and Future Outlook at Chelsea

Upon joining Chelsea, Palestra expressed his enthusiasm, telling the club’s website, “A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world. We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.”

The signing of Palestra signals a potential overhaul in Chelsea‘s defence under Alonso. Marc Cucurella has already departed for Real Madrid, and the club is reportedly considering a bid for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix. Additionally, full-back Malo Gusto, currently playing alongside Lacroix for France at the World Cup, looks set to depart, with Manchester City among the interested clubs. Chelsea would reportedly seek £75m for the former Lyon player.

In midfield, an £8m bid for Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka has been rejected. This comes as the club looks to address the possible departure of Enzo Fernandez, who informed the hierarchy in May that he wishes to leave. Chelsea will reportedly listen to offers of £120m for the Argentina international.

The acquisition of Palestra is a key component of Xabi Alonso‘s plans to reshape the squad, bringing in a player known for his versatility and athleticism to bolster the team’s defensive options.
