Luke Littler and Luke Humphries are aiming to achieve a record of five consecutive World Cup titles, surpassing the previous record held by Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis. The duo recently discussed their ambitions during an appearance on ITV’s World Cup coverage in New York, just before their participation in the US Masters at Madison Square Garden.
Luke Humphries revealed that he and Luke Littler have spoken about outdoing the four World Cup wins on the bounce achieved by Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis. Their goal is to dominate the World Cup for the next five years, with Humphries stating his aim to surpass the previous record holders by securing five titles. He mentioned that after their recent win, he told Littler that this could set a precedent to break the existing record.
The pair reflected on their recent World Cup of Darts victory in Frankfurt. Littler described the experience as amazing, noting that Humphries had previously won the title with Michael Smith. They both acknowledged feeling pressure in their first game against Spain, especially after their performance in the previous year. However, securing that initial win allowed them to improve as the tournament progressed, ultimately leading to their title.
Humphries added that they addressed their previous shortcomings and focused on working as a team this year. He noted that while their first game was challenging, they relaxed more as the competition continued, eventually achieving a record average in the final of the World Cup.
US Masters and England’s World Cup
The duo is currently in New York for the US Darts Masters, where Luke Humphries is the defending champion. Humphries expressed his enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the growth of the sport in the city, with sold-out crowds over the past few years. Littler, making his second appearance in New York, also shared his enjoyment of being in the city, particularly as a fan of boxing and UFC, and hopes to secure the title from Humphries.
Following the US Masters, both players are scheduled to attend England’s final group game against Panama at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday. Littler mentioned trying to watch England’s game against Ghana, which did not go their way, and expressed hope for a win in the upcoming match.
During their appearance, Laura Woods, the ITV anchor, engaged in a game of darts with Littler and Humphries. Paired with Littler, Woods achieved a treble 20 to secure a victory against Humphries and pundit Duncan Ferguson. She needed 42 to win and hit the treble 20 with her final dart, surprising herself with the feat.
Littler and Humphries recently secured England‘s sixth BetVictor World Cup of Darts title with a 10-5 win against the Netherlands. This victory followed a second-round exit to Germany the previous year, which had raised questions about their partnership. Despite challenges, they averaged over 104 to overcome the Dutch team.
Littler expressed his delight, stating it was their best performance of the tournament, and emphasised the importance of winning together. Humphries acknowledged the strong play of Michael van Gerwen during the final and highlighted the need to capitalise on opportunities against the Netherlands. He also noted a challenging game against Wales where luck played a role.
