Bruno Guimaraes has communicated to Newcastle United his desire to depart St James’ Park and join Arsenal. The Premier League champions are reportedly increasing their efforts to acquire the midfielder and have indicated a readiness to offer a significant sum for the player.
Reports from June indicated that Arsenal had a verbal offer, which was below a certain figure, rejected by Newcastle. At that time, Newcastle maintained they would not consider bids for Guimaraes. There has been no direct contact between the clubs regarding a transfer, and Newcastle continues to hold this position.
Guimaraes has two years remaining on his current contract, which was extended in October 2023. This deal previously included a temporary release clause, which expired in June 2024 without being activated.
Transfer Market Activity
This summer has already seen significant changes for Newcastle. Anthony Gordon has been transferred to Barcelona, and Sandro Tonali has moved to Tottenham Hotspur. Despite these departures, Newcastle is keen to retain Guimaraes, viewing him as a player not for sale.
However, Guimaraes has expressed to Newcastle that if an acceptable offer from Arsenal materialises, he would be interested in pursuing that opportunity. This preference is stated to be for footballing reasons rather than financial ones, as he is currently a high earner at Newcastle.
The player, who will turn 29 later this year, reportedly seeks to win titles and believes this may not happen at Newcastle in the near future. He is also keen to ensure that if he does leave, Newcastle receives a substantial fee for his transfer.
One report suggests that an offer around a specific high figure would prompt Newcastle to consider a sale. However, Arsenal has not yet made any direct contact with Newcastle regarding Guimaraes’s availability. The discussions about his potential departure have primarily been facilitated through agents.
Newcastle is reportedly surprised by the ongoing speculation given the lack of direct communication from Arsenal. Until a concrete offer is made, Newcastle states there is no decision for them to make.
The club has also been active in other transfer pursuits. They had a verbal agreement in place to sign Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, with a delegation having travelled to Germany to finalise the deal and personal terms verbally agreed. However, Aston Villa subsequently matched Newcastle’s verbally agreed deal, and Manzambi’s preference is now understood to be Villa, reportedly influenced by the prospect of Champions League football.
Squad Restructuring and Future Plans
Newcastle anticipates making several more signings this summer, potentially three or four. They are also looking for another midfielder, particularly if Bruno Guimaraes departs. The club has a long-standing interest in James Trafford as they seek a new number one goalkeeper, with moves expected in this transfer window.
Additionally, Newcastle is searching for a full-back capable of playing on either side, with a preference for a left-back. They might also consider bringing in another winger if Jacob Murphy leaves, and potentially a striker if either Nick Woltemade or Yoane Wissa are transferred.
The club’s new transfer policy focuses on acquiring younger players, generally between 18 and 24 years old, within a specific price range. Regarding potential departures, Nick Pope is expected to leave, though interest from Ipswich has reportedly diminished. There is also a possibility that Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock could depart. While no offers are currently on the table for these players, Newcastle would consider shifting them to facilitate a squad revamp.
Sean Steur, an 18-year-old signing, is viewed as a future prospect rather than an immediate starter. He will train with the first team and be given opportunities, but is expected to begin as a substitute, working to integrate into the team. The absence of European football next season is seen as beneficial for his development, allowing for more consistent training with Howe.
Eddie Howe, along with sporting director Ross Wilson and chief executive David Hopkinson, is aligned with this new transfer model. Howe believes that changes are necessary following the previous summer’s transfer window. The focus is on acquiring younger players who can be improved through training, which Howe sees as a key strength. The lack of midweek games due to no European football is also anticipated to aid player development and team freshness.
The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) remains committed to Newcastle, providing assurance regarding the club’s financial backing.
Guimaraes was part of Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad at this summer’s World Cup, starting every match before their elimination by Norway in the last-16, and provided four assists during the tournament.
