Controversy Surrounds England’s Equaliser
England secured a 2-1 victory over Norway in their World Cup 2026 quarter-final match in Miami, but the result was overshadowed by controversy surrounding Jude Bellingham’s equalising goal. Norway players and coaching staff claimed the ball struck a spidercam wire in the build-up to the goal, arguing it should have been disallowed. Had the ball been deemed to have touched the wire, play would have been restarted with a dropped ball.
Norway midfielder Sander Berge expressed frustration, stating, “It’s ridiculous, this one with the wire.” Norway captain Martin Odegaard also questioned the refereeing decisions, though he did not personally witness the incident. Norway head coach Stale Solbakken spoke with referee Clement Turpin at half-time regarding the incident. Solbakken indicated that the referee did not see the contact and received no message confirming it.
FIFA later released a statement asserting there was “no evidence” the ball had touched a wire. According to FIFA Media, the sensor in the connected ball showed no peak in its ‘heartbeat’ when in the air before England’s goal in minute 45+2, suggesting no change in the ball’s movement due to an overhead wire. Despite this, Solbakken maintained that the ball “dropped down straight from heaven,” with many on his bench reacting immediately to what they perceived as contact.
Former England striker Wayne Rooney, speaking on a sports broadcast, observed that the ball appeared to “deviate and come down quickly.” This type of ‘Snickometer-style’ technology, typically associated with cricket, had previously caused controversy in the tournament during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Croatia, where a goal was disallowed due to a slight touch detected by the technology.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel acknowledged the presence of a chip in the ball capable of detecting even minor contact, as demonstrated in the Croatia versus Portugal match. While he did not see the incident himself, Tuchel admitted that his side had experienced some fortunate moments during the game.
Bellingham’s Brace and Manager’s Assessment
Jude Bellingham scored both goals in England’s 2-1 extra-time victory, bringing his tournament tally to six goals. This places him level with captain Harry Kane and two goals behind the leading scorers, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi. Bellingham’s performance was crucial, particularly after Andreas Schjelderup’s opener for Norway had put England behind in the first half.
Despite the win, England manager Thomas Tuchel described the team’s quarter-final display as “sloppy.” He expressed dissatisfaction with the technical level, noting too many unforced errors and technical mistakes. Tuchel clarified that there was no disconnect with his team, stating his high affection for his players despite his demands for improvement.
Bellingham, however, dismissed Tuchel’s criticism, suggesting his manager might not fully appreciate the physical demands of playing against strong opponents like Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard, Antonio Nusa, and Alexander Sorloth in challenging conditions. He emphasised the difficulty of the match and the effort put in by his teammates.
Looking Ahead to the Semi-Finals
Bellingham also highlighted the necessity of winning “dirty” in a tournament setting, stating that not every game can be won with aesthetically pleasing football. He believes creating a positive environment is important as the team progresses. The match itself was described as a gruelling affair, with some players, including Declan Rice, struggling due to illness and the Florida humidity.
England’s victory sets up a semi-final clash against Argentina. This will be England’s first appearance in a World Cup semi-final since 2018. Tuchel will be hoping his team can find the clinical edge he felt was absent in the match against Norway.
