On-Air Banter During Semi-Final Coverage
During the pre-match coverage of England‘s World Cup semi-final match against Argentina, presenter Mark Chapman made a humorous remark regarding Gary Lineker. The comment, described as a joke, occurred after pundit Micah Richards mentioned Lineker’s name.
The exchange was prompted by an on-screen graphic that compared Jude Bellingham‘s World Cup goal tally with Lineker’s. The graphic showed Bellingham with seven goals from 9.4 metres, while Lineker had ten goals from 7.3 metres. This comparison led Richards to quip that Lineker was “dropping down the table.”
In response, Chapman asked, “Gary who?” He quickly clarified that his comment was intended as a joke, stating, “Before everybody piles on, joke! Goodness me,” to prevent any misunderstanding from viewers.
Lineker’s Recent Appearances and Departure
Gary Lineker was not part of the regular presenting team for the broadcaster’s World Cup coverage. His contract with the broadcaster concluded after the 2024-25 season, following a disagreement related to social media posts. Previously, the former England striker had issued an apology for sharing a post that contained an antisemitic trope.
Since his departure from the broadcaster, Lineker has been involved in other ventures. He has been co-hosting his podcast, “The Rest is Football,” alongside Micah Richards for Netflix. Additionally, he made a brief appearance on another channel’s coverage earlier in the tournament.
In a separate incident, Lineker made an unexpected return to the broadcaster’s live coverage following England‘s 2-1 victory over Norway. This appearance interrupted Richards‘ segment. Lineker‘s 26-year tenure as the host of Match of the Day ended by “mutual consent” on the final day of the 2024-25 Premier League season.
During this return, the broadcaster was covering Thomas Tuchel‘s team securing their place in the World Cup semi-finals after a performance in the quarter-finals. Lineker had been fronting much of the coverage for another channel and Netflix for the tournament up to that point.
Unexpected Interruption and VAR Criticism
The unexpected return saw Lineker interrupt a discussion involving former England striker Wayne Rooney and Ellen White, who were analysing the extra-time triumph. Richards was participating remotely from New York. The pundits were debating a penalty decision that had been reversed by referee Clement Turpin, with Richards sharing his thoughts on the official’s decision to overturn it.
Lineker suddenly appeared on screen, dressed in England gear, and offered his input, stating, “Definitely a penalty.” He then added, “Come on England. Nice to see you all there,” leaving Richards surprised. The 65-year-old then quickly left, prompting Rooney to make a light-hearted remark about Lineker‘s kit appearing “a bit snug.” The group then continued with their broadcast.
This appearance contrasted with Lineker‘s mood during another channel’s coverage of the Argentina versus Egypt game, which Argentina won 3-2 after further involvement from VAR. In that match, Egypt had a goal disallowed early in the second half of their round of 16 clash, after VAR spotted a foul on Lisandro Martinez. This decision was unpopular with Lineker, who criticised VAR.
He commented on the lack of consistency from VAR, stating, “The problem is we will never, ever get consistency from VAR because they change their tune.” He further elaborated that the issue was not necessarily with the individuals operating VAR, but with VAR itself. This criticism followed a World Cup semi-final match between England and Argentina.
