Neville’s Choice for Manchester United Midfield
Gary Neville, a former captain for Manchester United, has identified Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch as a player he would like to see join his former club. Speaking on The Overlap, Neville was asked which Liverpool player he would sign for Manchester United if given the opportunity, and he chose Gravenberch, noting a “desperate” need for a midfielder at Old Trafford.
Neville stated that Gravenberch is the type of player he would prefer over others like Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister. He explained his reasoning, saying, “I’d go with Gravenberch. If you said to me, ‘United, now, who would I take?’ — I’d take Gravenberch probably. He’s the best of the three midfielders that United would need, and we need a midfielder desperately.”
Gravenberch joined Liverpool in August 2023 as part of a midfield rebuild that also included the signings of Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, and Wataru Endo. Under Arne Slot, Gravenberch became a key player, featuring in of Liverpool’s games during their 2024/25 Premier League-winning campaign. He made Premier League starts in Jurgen Klopp’s final season before transitioning to a No. 6 role under Slot.
Midfield Reinforcements and Rivalry Dynamics
Manchester United has been active in strengthening their midfield. The club confirmed the signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and is also set to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after activating his release clause. Despite these additions, Neville’s comments highlight a perceived ongoing need for midfield talent at the club.
The rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United means that direct transfers between the two clubs are uncommon. The last player to make a direct move was Phil Chisnall in 1964. Gravenberch’s importance to Liverpool is evident, as he was one of only four Reds players to exceed minutes last season. He also signed a long-term contract extension with Liverpool in March.
Liverpool, while having Gravenberch and Endo in central defensive midfield roles, has also been linked with other players. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Monaco’s Lamine Camara are among those rumoured. There have also been reports concerning Curtis Jones, with Inter Milan reportedly considering a bid for the player. Jones has previously responded to rumours linking him with Nottingham Forest.
Neville’s Appreciation for Klopp’s Liverpool
Beyond player selections, Neville also shared his admiration for former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. When asked which manager he would have most liked to play under, Neville chose Klopp, citing his football style and personality. He stated, “I think Klopp with his football, his personality, I just love it.”
Neville praised the aggressive and electric style of football displayed by Klopp’s Liverpool, particularly during the period when Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino were at their peak. He described their front three as “devastating” and highlighted the strength of their defence, including Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and goalkeeper Alisson. Neville’s comments underscore the impact Klopp had on the team, making them a formidable opponent even for a rival club’s former captain.
Gravenberch’s performances for the Netherlands at the World Cup were also praised by Alan Shearer, despite their early exit from the tournament.
