Late Goal Decides Match

Türkiye secured a 3-2 victory over the United States in their final Group D match at SoFi Stadium. The winning goal came in the eighth minute of stoppage time, with Kaan Ayhan poking the ball into the net. This result marked Türkiye’s only win of the World Cup campaign, though it was not enough to prevent their elimination from the tournament.

The United States, who had already clinched first place in Group D with earlier victories against Paraguay and Australia, fielded a lineup with nine new starters. This included resting several key players who had received yellow cards in previous matches, such as Tyler Adams, Antonee Robinson, Chris Richards, and Folarin Balogun, to avoid potential suspensions for the upcoming Round of 32.

The match saw an early lead for the United States when Auston Trusty scored in the third minute, marking his first international goal. This goal was the second fastest in the tournament after a previous record set in 2014. However, Türkiye responded, with Arda Güler and Orkun Kökçü scoring before halftime, giving them a lead.

In the second half, Sebastian Berhalter equalised for the United States in the 49th minute with a strike from outside the box. Despite the United States creating further opportunities, including several near misses, Türkiye ultimately found the decisive goal in the final moments of the game.

Pulisic Returns to Action

Christian Pulisic, who had been sidelined since the first half of the opening match due to a calf injury, entered the game in the 58th minute, replacing Tim Weah. His introduction was met with a significant ovation from the crowd. Pulisic quickly made an impact, creating scoring opportunities and nearly scoring himself, with one shot being tipped onto the post by Türkiye goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır.

Midfielder Brenden Aaronson commented on the team’s performance, stating that despite the loss, he believed the team was in a good position and full of confidence. He acknowledged that the team had chances and could have performed better defensively but still considered it a strong game.

Meanwhile, defensive midfielder Cristian Roldan was unavailable for the match due to a strained quadriceps, having not trained during the week. This led to Weston McKennie playing in a deeper midfield role.

Looking Ahead to the Knockout Stage

The United States will now prepare for their Round of 32 knockout match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, scheduled for Wednesday in Santa Clara, California. Bosnia and Herzegovina finished third in Group B with a 1-1-1 record. This upcoming match marks a significant moment for the United States, as they have secured passage to the knockout stage after just two group matches, a feat not achieved since their return to the World Cup in 1990.

The match against Türkiye, while not affecting the United States’ group standing, provided an opportunity for several players to gain experience. Goalkeeper Matt Turner, defenders Miles Robinson and Mark McKenzie, and midfielder Brenden Aaronson had not played in the first two matches but featured in this encounter. Sebastian Berhalter, who scored and assisted in the match, expressed pride in the team’s ability to step up, even if some moments were missed.
