Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of England midfielder Morgan Rogers in a deal valued at £117m. This move is set to establish a new transfer record for an English player and marks Chelsea‘s most expensive signing to date.
The 23-year-old is expected to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an additional option for a further year. Rogers is scheduled to undergo a medical examination on Monday, following his return from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup.
The fee surpasses the £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer, setting a new benchmark for an English player. It also exceeds the £107m Chelsea spent on Enzo Fernandez in 2023, making Rogers the club’s record signing.
Rogers’ Journey to Stamford Bridge
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 in a deal initially worth £8m, which could rise to £15m. His rapid progression saw him score 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Unai Emery‘s side and contribute to their Europa League triumph last season.
Due to a clause in his transfer from Middlesbrough, the Championship club is set to receive at least £20.4m from his move to Chelsea, depending on triggered add-ons. This is believed to be an English record for a transfer sell-on fee.

This transfer window has seen Chelsea move with speed, securing a player who was reportedly Arsenal‘s top target. Arsenal were unwilling to match the asking price, allowing Chelsea to secure Rogers’ services. Rogers is expected to become a Chelsea player early next week, provided he passes his medical on Monday.
