Supporters Face Account Restrictions

Manchester United supporters’ groups, including the Fans’ Forum, Manchester United Supporters Trust (Must), and The 1958, have expressed significant concerns to the club regarding the recent suspension of season tickets. The club’s actions are part of an initiative to prevent the illegal reselling of seats, but some fans feel they are being unfairly targeted.

The club contacted fans who had accessed accounts linked to the club or forwarded tickets using six or more devices. This activity, in the club’s view, suggested a potential for buying tickets for resale. Club rules state that members can only forward tickets to other members or sell them back to Manchester United.

Those contacted were asked to explain the use of multiple accounts, identify the devices used, and provide photo identification to verify their validity. An email from the club indicated that a detailed review of ticketing and digital platform activity had identified sustained activity that might breach the club’s ticketing terms and conditions.

Fan Reaction and Club Response

Fans’ accounts were suspended, leading to season tickets being frozen. Supporters were initially given only three days to appeal, despite the club’s terms and conditions typically allowing 14 days. In a joint statement, supporter groups acknowledged the need for robust action against professional touting and automated purchasing but emphasized that such actions must be fair, proportionate, and transparent.

Longstanding supporters, some of whom have followed the club for decades across multiple generations, feel they are being treated as suspects without clear evidence or due process. This approach has created a perception among fans of a “ban first and ask questions later” policy. The Fans’ Forum has called for a pause on further suspensions and season ticket cancellations to allow for meaningful discussions.

Reasons provided by fans for using multiple devices include managing tickets for friends or assisting elderly family members who may have difficulty with technology. One season ticket-holder for over 35 years, Andy, expressed anger, stating that he felt the club wanted loyal fans to leave. He highlighted the bond formed through attending matches with his father, a season ticket-holder since 1974.

Manchester United has not officially commented on the process or the fan reaction. However, the club’s position is understood to be that no formal bans or sanctions have been applied. Any season tickets that have been revoked are expected to be reissued before the team’s first home game of the season against Ipswich Town on 30 August.

The club has applied restrictions to accounts and offered a three-day appeal window once a verdict is reached. This is reportedly because the club believes some accounts are being used for illegal resale, and a longer 14-day period could be exploited to sell tickets. The club conducted a similar crackdown last season, cancelling 22,000 tickets for the first five home games, and believes a significant percentage of season tickets are controlled by touts.

Supporters whose accounts have been flagged are required to submit evidence to the club to defend themselves if they believe they have been wrongly accused. While no tickets have been revoked yet, an appeals panel will make final decisions on each case before the Premier League season begins on 22 August.

Some fans have received emails threatening to revoke their season tickets, with a new batch of supporters receiving these emails recently. While some restrictions were lifted, others remain in limbo. The club sent a statement to some fans who appealed, describing the operation as “successful” but acknowledging that “some innocent supporters may have been affected” and apologised for the inconvenience. The Manchester United Supporters’ Trust and United Fans’ Forum are actively assisting affected supporters through official channels with the club.
