Real Madrid’s Stance on Tchouameni
Manchester United are reportedly continuing their search for a third midfielder during the current transfer window. Recent reports indicate a potential shift in Real Madrid‘s position regarding midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. While Fabrizio Romano had previously stated that Tchouameni had agreed to a new deal with Madrid until 2031, and that manager Jose Mourinho was keen to retain him, other reports suggest Madrid might be open to selling the player.
According to one report, Real Madrid are willing to sell Aurelien Tchouameni to Manchester United this summer. This development would be surprising, particularly as Tchouameni is understood to have agreed to a new contract, though it has not been formally announced by Madrid. Furthermore, Tchouameni is currently the only dedicated senior defensive midfielder in the Real Madrid squad.

A Manchester United reporter, Andy Mitten, mentioned on July 14 that despite Tchouameni signing a contract, there was still a possibility of a sale. Mitten noted that Real Madrid might need to sell a high-value player to fund significant new acquisitions. However, Fabrizio Romano later reiterated on Wednesday that Tchouameni is expected to remain at Real Madrid, having already signed a new contract, and is considered an important player by Mourinho.
United’s Midfield Strategy
Manchester United are not rushing their decision on a third midfield signing this summer. The club is taking time to evaluate the market after securing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined fee. These additions are believed to provide the team with experienced players, allowing United to carefully assess further options.
The situation around Tchouameni is also linked to Real Madrid‘s reported interest in Manchester City midfielder Rodri. Should Madrid succeed in signing Rodri, it could potentially lead to either Tchouameni or Eduardo Camavinga being made available for transfer. Manchester United have previously shown interest in both players, with a preference for Tchouameni, who is 26 years old.

United conducted background checks on Tchouameni several months ago and would remain interested if he were to become available. However, Manchester City are currently unwilling to sell Rodri, which could prolong the uncertainty surrounding Real Madrid‘s midfield situation into August.
Other Midfield Targets
Beyond Tchouameni, Manchester United are considering other midfield options. Manu Kone, 25, who performed well during the World Cup, is under consideration at Old Trafford. However, Kone’s injury record is a factor being assessed. United have not yet committed to a primary target for their third midfield acquisition and have not initiated talks with Roma regarding a potential deal for Kone.
Another player under consideration is 28-year-old Norwegian international Sander Berge from Fulham. Manchester United might also revisit their interest in Carlos Baleba, who was a target a year ago before Brighton reportedly placed a significant price tag on him. United are not expected to meet such a valuation this summer and have not been in contact with Brighton during the current window, though they still admire the Cameroon international.
The club is also wary of entering a bidding war for targets. Chelsea reportedly had a bid rejected for 22-year-old Alex Scott from Bournemouth, and United are reluctant to engage in similar situations. Manchester United launched their new away kit for the 2026/27 season, inspired by the 1988 kit, featuring wavy stripes.
