Mason Mount has expressed his positive physical condition as Manchester United continues its pre-season preparations. The attacking midfielder, who joined United in 2023 from Chelsea, is looking to be in top form for the upcoming season. Mount’s comments followed United’s 5-0 pre-season victory against Rosenborg in Trondheim.
Mount, 27, reflected on the match against the Norwegian side, noting that it provided an opportunity for the team to refine their strategies. He highlighted the benefit of playing against a team that is currently in the middle of their season, describing Rosenborg as “sharp” and the game as a “step up from the last game.” He also emphasised the importance of securing a win during pre-season.
Pre-season progress and new partnerships
The midfielder discussed his developing partnership with new signing Andrey Santos in United’s midfield. Mount mentioned that he has known Santos for some time, having observed his progression since he joined Chelsea’s first team. He described Santos as a “really good player” who reads the game effectively, despite his youth. Mount noted Santos’s experience from loan spells and playing in the Premier League.
Mount explained that Santos’s more defensive style allows him to push further forward, a role he has embraced in recent games. He also pointed out that both players are keen to win the ball back and play aggressively. Mount stated that he has played in this midfield position for many years and finds it a role he enjoys and sees himself excelling in.
During the match against Rosenborg, Mount was given the captain’s armband in the second half. This occurred after Harry Maguire, who had initially worn the armband in the absence of Bruno Fernandes, was substituted at half-time. Mount admitted he “loved” the experience of leading the team on the pitch.
When questioned about his leadership role within the squad, Mount indicated that he sees himself as a leader who sets an example through his work rate. He mentioned having been a captain previously, years ago, and enjoys the responsibility, particularly with younger players on the pitch. He finds satisfaction in communicating with them and helping them feel comfortable both during games and off the field.
Physical condition and upcoming fixtures
Mount provided an update on his physical well-being, stating, “I feel brilliant. I feel really good.” He attributed this to finishing the previous season strongly, having played several games and been actively involved. He aims to build on that momentum from the end of last season, despite having had a break.
He expressed his eagerness to return to training and get back into the rhythm of playing. Mount feels “strong and ready to go,” acknowledging that there are still several pre-season games and weeks ahead to continue working on various aspects. Injuries have previously affected Mount’s time at United, and it was only in his third season that he completed a full 90 minutes in a Premier League match.
Despite these challenges, Mount has consistently maintained the trust of his managers, who appreciate his contributions and desire his success. His versatility, allowing him to play in multiple midfield roles, is also valued. United’s next fixture is scheduled against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on Saturday, followed by a match against PSG the subsequent weekend in Gothenburg.
