Woking director of football Jody Brown has indicated that there were “growing concerns” within the club leading up to the departure of former England striker Jermain Defoe from his managerial role. Defoe’s exit from the National League side was announced as a mutual agreement to part ways with immediate effect.
Defoe, who is 43 years old, had been in charge for approximately four months, overseeing six league games. His departure occurred just two weeks before Woking’s first match of the new season against Sutton United.
Brown acknowledged that Defoe’s feedback was consistently positive, with the former player often expressing enthusiasm for the upcoming season, both publicly and privately. This led Brown to understand the surprise and speculation surrounding the sudden change in management.
Internal Concerns and Unreceived Reports
Despite Defoe’s outward positivity, Brown stated that in recent weeks, feedback from various parts of the club, including players, staff, and other departments, highlighted increasing concerns. To address these issues and provide necessary support, Brown requested a brief report from Defoe and his assistant, Paul Bracewell. This report was intended to detail the squad’s current depth, recruitment targets, and any operational challenges.
Brown mentioned that this report was requested on more than one occasion but was never received. A meeting was subsequently scheduled to review preparations for the season, involving the directors, manager, assistant manager, and head of operations. However, neither Defoe nor his assistant attended this meeting or the training session scheduled for that day.
Brown clarified that Defoe had never directly communicated any serious concerns to him throughout his tenure, leading Brown to decline speculation regarding Defoe’s specific reasons for leaving.
Reflecting on the Appointment and Future
Brown took responsibility for the decision to appoint Defoe, describing him as a “likeable” individual. Brown had believed Defoe was the right person to guide the club into a new era. He noted that success as a player does not always translate into effective management and leadership, a sentiment seen many times in football.
Defoe himself commented on his time at Woking, calling it an “eye-opening managerial experience” that he believes will strengthen him for future challenges in his career. He expressed pride in the work undertaken and a feeling that something special was being built with Bracewell and Karl Halabi.
During his playing career, Defoe scored 305 goals in 763 senior appearances for clubs such as West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth, and Sunderland. He also scored 20 times in 57 international appearances before retiring in 2022. Prior to his full-time managerial role at Woking, he was part of an interim coaching staff at Rangers in 2021 and worked in the Spurs academy, leaving in 2024.
The club had been fully committed to supporting Defoe, influencing player recruitment, staffing decisions, and football matters. Brown highlighted that just days before Defoe’s departure, the club finalized the signing of an excellent player identified by Defoe, demonstrating ongoing support.
