Switzerland tops Group B in Vancouver
Switzerland have secured their place in the last 32 of the World Cup after defeating co-hosts Canada, finishing at the top of Group B. Goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi in the initial 12 minutes of the second half were instrumental in clinching the top position in Vancouver.
This victory also marks Switzerland as only the third nation, alongside Argentina and France, to reach the knockout stages in each of the last four World Cups. As a result, they are set to face one of the third-placed teams from Group E, F, G, H, I, or J in Vancouver on 3 July.
The first half saw limited opportunities, with Switzerland, led by captain Granit Xhaka in his 149th international appearance, coming closest to scoring. Breel Embolo’s effort from inside the area was saved by Maxime Crepeau. Canada struggled to create significant threats, managing only three shots on target in a subdued first-half performance, despite their previous strong showing against Qatar.
Switzerland took the lead shortly after the restart when Manzambi delivered a cross to the back post, which Vargas calmly converted for his second goal of the tournament. Eleven minutes later, Manzambi scored what proved to be the winning goal from inside the area, following impressive hold-up play from Embolo.
Canada’s journey to the knockout stages
Despite their defeat, Canada have advanced to the knockout stages for the first time in their history, securing second place in Group B. Their path included a draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina and a decisive victory against Qatar in earlier matches.
However, by not finishing at the top of the standings, Jesse Marsch’s side has forfeited their home advantage and will not play any further matches in Canada. Their next fixture is scheduled for 28 June at the Los Angeles Stadium in California, where they will face the runners-up of Group A.
Canada managed to reduce the deficit 14 minutes from time when substitute Promise David completed a team move just 76 seconds after entering the game. However, this late goal was not enough to spark a full comeback.
In previous matches, Canada had notably defeated Qatar by a significant margin. Switzerland also secured a 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, a match that saw five goals and a red card in the final stages, despite being goalless until the 73rd minute.
The Swiss team is considered an experienced tournament side that has seemingly found its form in this World Cup. Their attack, once in motion, has demonstrated considerable strength. Canada’s performance against a high-pressing side like Bosnia suggested they might struggle with less time on the ball against teams with superior individual quality.

The hosts’ impressive start to the tournament and their advancement to the knockout stages is a significant achievement, even if they had to settle for a runners-up spot in the group.
