Chelsea has completed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a fee of £117m. The attacking midfielder has agreed to a six-year contract, with an option for an additional year, and underwent a medical in London on Monday. This move follows Rogers’ return from the World Cup in the United States, where he featured for England.
The transfer represents a significant acquisition for Chelsea, who had been tracking Rogers for over two years and identified him as a primary attacking target. The club moved quickly after England’s semi-final defeat to Argentina, with a combined effort from sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso, and co-owner Behdad Eghbali helping to secure the deal. Even Chelsea captain Reece James reportedly advocated for the move from within the England camp.
The deal was finalised on Saturday afternoon, shortly before Rogers participated in England’s bronze-medal victory over France. The strong relationship between Chelsea co-owner Eghbali and Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris was instrumental in underpinning the agreement. Although Arsenal had shown interest and made contact with Villa, they ultimately declined to match Chelsea’s bid, adhering to their own valuation of the player.
Rogers’ role at Chelsea
Rogers’ arrival is expected to recalibrate Chelsea’s transfer strategy, aligning with Eghbali’s previous statements about needing more “ready-made players.” Rogers’ transition to Chelsea may be eased by existing connections; he is friends with Cole Palmer, a former teammate at Manchester City’s academy, and knows Levi Colwill and Reece James through the England set-up. Other former City academy players at Chelsea include Tosin Adarabioyo, Jamie Gittens, Romeo Lavia, and Liam Delap.
Rogers and Palmer, who were both 16 when they first became friends at City, starred together in the club’s FA Youth Cup-winning under-18 side in 2020. Their friendship extends to shared celebrations, with Palmer registering a trademark for a “cold” celebration that Rogers had previously performed for Middlesbrough against West Brom.
Despite similarities in their playing styles, Rogers and Palmer’s versatility means they could play together or in each other’s positions. One source suggests Rogers may primarily operate on the left wing, with Palmer playing centrally as a number 10. This setup would create competition for places on the right wing among players like Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, and new signing Geovany Quenda, with Jamie Gittens as an understudy.
Alonso is considering various tactical options, including a back-four system and a back-three system, which he used effectively at Bayer Leverkusen. A back-three system could potentially allow Palmer and Rogers to play as dual number 10s, with wingers taking on deeper wing-back roles. Rogers contributed 14 goals and 12 assists in 55 appearances last season, adding significant firepower to the squad.
Financial implications and squad adjustments
The substantial fee for Rogers adds to Chelsea’s spending, which also includes £47m for full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta, and potential arrivals of defenders Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano and Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace. Midfielder Valentin Barco is also expected to join from Strasbourg, though this deal has not yet been confirmed by Chelsea.
To comply with financial regulations, Chelsea generated over £120m from player sales, including Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, Andrey Santos to Manchester United, Tyrique George to Everton, and Jimmy-Jay Morgan to West Bromwich Albion. The club also faced a £2.6m fine from Uefa for breaching financial regulations this summer, a significant improvement from the £26.7m fine last summer, with most of the current amount potentially waived if finances continue to improve.
Aston Villa, also under Uefa scrutiny, has been active in the transfer market, signing midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves for £38m. They are also expected to conclude a deal for Lucas Digne to join Paris Saint-Germain after PSG triggered an £8.5m release clause. Arsenal, having missed out on Rogers, will now consider alternative targets such as Bradley Barcola from Paris St-Germain and Junior Kroupi from Bournemouth.
Chelsea’s squad, which finished 10th last season and will not participate in European football, currently has a large number of senior players. With five new signings anticipated this summer, the club aims to manage its roster to maintain financial health. The transfer window has seen significant activity, with Rogers’ medical taking place on Monday.
